When your washing machine fills and drains but won't spin, the problem is usually one of a handful of causes. Here's how to diagnose it.
Unbalanced load
Heavy items bunched on one side trip the machine's safety sensor. Redistribute the load evenly and try again — this fixes it more often than you'd expect.
Drainage problem
Many machines won't spin until they've fully drained. A clogged drain hose or filter is a common culprit. Clean the filter and check the hose for kinks.
Worn drive belt
On belt-driven machines, a stretched or broken belt stops the drum from spinning. This needs a replacement part and is best handled by a technician.
Faulty lid switch or door lock
The machine won't spin if it thinks the door is open. A failed lid switch or door-lock sensor is a frequent cause on both top and front loaders.
Motor or control board issues
If none of the above apply, the motor, capacitor or control board may be at fault — these require professional diagnosis.
Quick check: run an empty rinse-and-spin cycle. If it still won't spin, it's time for a professional.
